Visalia is located in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley and is the 47th largest city in the state of California. Visalia is the largest city in Tulare County, and it is the county seat of Tulare County.
Visalia is located within a few miles of the Sierra Nevada, which is part of the reason that it is often referred to as the Gateway to the Sequoias. The other reason that it earned that nickname is because it is the closest biggest city to Sequoia National Park.
The racial makeup in Visalia is not as diverse as other areas, with the 2000 Census Reporting 75.3% of the population was White, while 36.3% of the population was Hispanic. 6.5% of the population was Asian, 2.1% were African American, and 6.6% of the population was from other races not listed.
The economy of Visalia relies heavily on agriculture, which makes sense being that Visalia is located within the San Joaquin Valley. The San Joaquin Valley is primarily agricultural lands, with the primary crops being grapes, cotton, citrus, and olives. Livestock is another driving factor for the economy. Visalia is home to diary barns and slaughterhouses alike.
