Denver Community Info
With the largest city park system in the United States and an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, the residents of Denver, Colorado enjoy an active lifestyle and an appreciation of the outdoors. Located just east of the Rocky Mountains, home to more than 20 ski resorts and hundreds of hiking and biking trails, Denver is currently the “thinnest” city in America, with less than 20% of residents being overweight. Denver has the elite distinction of being the most educated city in the U.S.; 92% of those living in the metro area possess high school diplomas, and 37% hold at least a bachelor’s degree. This statistic reflects the fact that Denver has the highest number of “Baby Boomers” (those residents between the ages of 35 and 54) of any major city in the U.S. In addition to their scholastic achievements, Denver citizens value their arts and entertainment: they contribute more public funding for the arts per capita than any other U.S. city, and Denver is home to the nation’s 2nd largest performing arts center.
Denver’s economy is based, in part, on its geographic position. Because Denver is about halfway between large Midwestern cities and cities on the West Coast, it has become a sensible location for distribution of goods. Its location, coupled with the growth and development of other large corporations in the central U.S., has made Denver an important trade point and a good place to work. Citizens enjoy a relatively high median household income of $41,767 per year. Denver’s location makes it a necessary stopping point for intercontinental transportation, including the Amtrak train, which runs through Denver’s historic Union Station. Transportation within the Denver Metropolitan area is managed by the RTD, which operates more than 1,000 buses that serve more than 10,000 bus stops in the area. Additionally, residents enjoy 5 light rail lines for more expedient travel. The Denver International Airport, located on the city’s northeastern side, is the largest and busiest airport in the U.S.
Though Denverites hold non-partisan elections, Democrats have long held the majority of votes. Denver’s citizens have voted for the Democratic Presidential nominee for the last 50 years. In recent years, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, also a Democrat, has made many positive steps towards rebuilding the city, taking a firm stance on helping people who are homeless. Denver’s homeless population is significantly lower than many other major cities, and the city has created a ten-year plan to end homelessness.
