Located on the western part of the Florida Panhandle, citizens of Pensacola enjoy mild winters and hot summers. The Pensacola area is home to an abundance of world-renowned beaches, including Perdido Key Number 3 and Perdido Key Number 7. Residents have access to a number of forms of outdoor recreation; golfing, swimming, boating, fishing, and tennis are just a few. Pensacola hosts several cultural performances, held regularly at local theatres such as the Civic Center and the Saenger Theatre, as well as monthly art shows and exhibits in area galleries and small businesses. The Great Gulf Coast Arts Fest, Lobsterfest, and Festival on the Green are just a handful of the city’s annual events, most of which take place in Seville Square and Bartram or Fountain Park.
Pensacola has an economy that revolves in part around the city’s distinction as a seaport. The manufacturing and trade industries continue to play an important role in the local economy. Residents of Pensacola have a median household income of roughly $40,000 annually. In recent years, Pensacola has become an increasingly popular city to retire to, and the median age of residents is 39.4, which is higher than the state average. The city is fairly well educated on the whole, and Pensacola is home to several secondary and post-secondary schools. Of the population who are at least 25 years of age or more, about 85% hold a high school diploma, and 32% have at least a bachelor’s degree.
Traffic into and out of Pensacola is largely dependent on I-10 and I-110. The Pensacola Regional Airport controls air traffic through the area. Within the city, public transportation is handled by the ECAT. Still a number of residents and tourists to Pensacola navigate the city on foot.
Pensacola is a politically conservative city, with the majority of residents affiliating themselves with the Republican Party. Current Mayor Mike Wiggins, along with the Pensacola City Council, has devoted much of his time in office to increasing public safety for the city’s diverse population, which is approximately 64% White, 31% African American, 2% Hispanic or Latino, and 1% American Indian. Mayor Wiggins is also devoted to improving city aesthetics by updating codes for land development and by properly maintaining public parks and properties. The local government of Pensacola is hoping to further promote the economic development of the city through generating more opportunities for affordable housing, utilizing green initiatives, and nurturing partnerships between public and private sectors to encourage more small business development.
