About 15 miles north of Detroit, Warren, Michigan shares Detroit’s distinction of having the bulk of its economy based on the government, construction, transportation equipment, and machinery industries. Warren’s population, which is older than the national average for a city its size (the current average age is about 38 years-old), has a median household income of roughly $43,000 annually. The city’s residents are notorious for their longevity of residency. Citizens have an average residency in the community of 35.5 years.
There are three major colleges/universities in Warren: Macomb Community College, Davenport University, and the Warren Center for Central Michigan University. Of the population of Warren who are 25 years of age or older, about 77% hold a high school diploma or higher, and 13% have at least a bachelor’s degree. Students and residents navigate the city largely by foot or by car. Warren is accessible via I-696, M-53, M-97, and M-102. Most of the city’s air traffic is controlled by Detroit’s Metro Airport.
Current Warren Mayor James Fouts has been working to enhance the quality of life of the city’s residents by reviving neighborhood watch groups and widening the range of neighborhood clean-up programs, as well as creating new parks and their corresponding recreational programs. Popular parks in the city include Winters Park, Altermatt Park, Wiegand Park, Groesbeck Park, and Saint Clements Field. Residents have access to several hiking and biking trails, as well as playgrounds and picnic areas. There are many cultural attractions for residents and visitors in Warren, such as the Fun Factory and Holiday Vacation International. The Knapp School of Dance is regarded as one of the city’s finest youth ballet and tap centers. City Square offers several events year round, including public ice-skating opportunities in winter months.
The city has kept up many of its historical structures, several of which are recognized as historical markers; these include the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant, the General Motors Technical Center, the John Theisen House, and the Warren Township District’s Number 4 School. The Warren Civic Theatre has become an important hub for youth theatre camps and theatrical performances year round, as well as for adult and child art classes and workshops.
