Mobile is located along the central Gulf Coast of the United States and on the Mobile River. Mobile is the third most populated city in the state of Alabama, but it is also the county seat of Mobile County. The city of Mobile was named after the Native American Mobilian tribe that the French colonists found in the area of Mobile Bay.
Mobile is located in the southwestern corner of the state of Alabama and has a total area of 159.4 square miles. Of the total are of the city 117.9 square miles is land, while 41.5 square miles is water.
Mobile is home to a variety of different cultural influences, which is partly due to the various colonists that settled in the city before it became a part of the United States. Some of the various cultures that exist in Mobile are Spanish, French, British, African, Creole, and the Catholic heritage. The annual Carnival celebration is one of the best illustrations of the various cultures that influence life in Mobile.
Carnival starts in the early days of November where numerous balls are held in celebration of Carnival. After January 5, there will be numerous parades around town that celebrate the different cultures found in Mobile. All Carnival celebrations end at midnight on Mardi Gras. The end of the Carnival Celebrations signals the beginning of Ash Wednesday and the first day of Lent. The residents of Mobile refer to the entire Carnival season as Mardi Gras, but Mardi Gras literally means Fat Tuesday, which is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.
The racial makeup in the city is not very diverse according to the 2000 Census Bureau report. The two main races in Mobile are white, African American, which 48.2% of the population was White, and 47.9% of the population was African American. Despite the fact that there are only two races present, Mobile has a very rich heritage.
