Community Info
Oakland Community Info
With its mild to warm climate and its location on the San Francisco Bay, Oakland has seen an influx in its population, and it is currently California’s eighth largest city. The success of Oakland’s economy is due in large part to its location: the city is situated near neighboring San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Berkeley, and the Pacific Coast, making it a natural transportation and commercial hub. Roughly 200,000 of the city’s residents hold jobs that have been generated by the cargo movement in and out of the city’s seaports. The median household income for the city is roughly $48,000 annually.
Oakland is home to several college and professional sports teams, including the Oakland Raiders, the Golden State Warriors, and the Oakland A’s. Major colleges in the area include Laney College, Merritt College, and Mills College. In addition to sports, Oakland residents have access to several festivals each year; the Art & Soul Festival, Lakefest, and Oaktoberfest are just a few. Many of the city’s events happen around Oakland’s Lake Merritt, which is located near the city’s downtown. The downtown area has a strong art scene; the Fox and Paramount Theatres are housed in downtown Oakland.
The topography of Oakland is divided by the relatively flat parts of the city, often called the ‘”flats,” and the parts of the city that lay in the Sierra foothills, which residents call the “hills.” Transportation between the hills and the flats is facilitated by Oakland’s bus systems, the BART, and Amtrak. Public transportation is widely used by Oakland residents, with almost one quarter of employed citizens claiming to commute using non-automobile forms of transportation. Bicycle usage has increased in recent years as the city continues to implement its plans for more bike lanes, as well as places to park bikes.
Oakland’s Mayor Ron Dellums has been working with the city to develop strategies that will yield economic pay-offs from the use of green energy in Oakland. Mayor Dellums also places a high importance on education. Currently, of the Oakland residents who are 25 or older, 73.9% hold at least a high school degree, and 30.9% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. Additionally, Mayor Dellums, like the mayors who served before him, has been working to make the streets safe for Oakland’s residents, particularly from race related crimes. Oakland’s population is diverse: the population is roughly 36% African American, 24% White, 22% Hispanic or Latino, 8% Chinese, and 2% Vietnamese. Violent crimes have dropped significantly in recent years.
