Consolidated cities have been merged with the county to form a unified jurisdiction. Being a consolidated city means that Augusta has the powers of both a city and a county, but it also must take on the responsibilities and duties of both the city and the county.
Augusta is located along the border of Georgia and South Carolina along the Savannah River halfway up the river directly on the fall line.
The local economy of Augusta relies on medicine, biotechnology, and military. The Medical College of Georgia alone employs over 7,000 people, but the Medical District, along with the University Hospital employs over 25,000 people, but it also has an economic impact of over $1.8 billion. Two other large employers in the city of Augusta are the Savannah River site, which is a Department of Energy nuclear facility, and the U.S. Army Signal Center located at Fort Gordon.
Augusta is one of the more racially diverse cities that you will find in the United States. Based on the information that was released in 2000, only 44.91% of the population was white, while 50.37% of the population was African American. 2.79% of the population from any race was Hispanic.
Augusta's claim to fame is the Augusta National Golf Course. This golf course is home to the Masters, which is the first major golf tournament each year. Not only is the golf course home to the Masters it was also ranked as the best golf course in the world in 2009.
