In the early days of its founding around 1870, Wichita was a bustling trade center between frontier businessmen and the native population. Due to its position on the Chisholm Trail, it allowed cattleman who were doing cattle drives going north to gain access to the railroads so that they could take the cattle to the eastern seaboard.
Wichita is located in the south central part of Kansas along the Arkansas River. Wichita is not only the 51st largest city in the country, but it is also the county seat of Sedgwick County. As of 2000, Wichita had a population of 361,420 people, which made it the most populated city in Kansas. In the year 2006, the population of Wichita was estimated to be 357,698, which meant that the city's population grew about 1.8% over the past six years.
Wichita is home to many big corporations, which employ the majority of the people that live in Wichita and the surrounding communities. Koch Industries, which is the second biggest privately held corporation in the United States, has their headquarters in Wichita. Chase Morgan, the roller-coaster manufacturer, has a base in the community. Some of the other big name businesses that are based in Wichita include Learjet, Cessna, and Hawker Beechcraft.
When the 2000 census was performed, 75.20% of the residents were White, 15.62% were African American, 1.16% were Native American, and 9.62% were Hispanic.
