Wilmington, North Carolina is the county seat of New Hanover County. In 2000, the population of Wilmington was 75,838, but in 2008, the population increased to 100,192. The city of Wilmington was named after Spencer Compton the Earl of Wilmington. The original town was settled on the Cape Fear River, one of its main tourist attractions is the mile long Riverwalk that is located in the historic section of downtown Wilmington.
Wilmington's population is primarily white, currently about 70.57% of the population is white, but other races are present in the city. 25.82% of the population is African American, 0.9% of the population is Asian, and 2.3% of the population is Hispanic. Even though majority of the population is white, the public schools try to keep each of the schools racially and economically balanced. The way that they do this is by using a household's income to assign children to schools, which is quite different from other areas that assign schools based on where a family lives.
Two of the most important industries to the city of Wilmington are research and tourism. Tourism is a big deal in Wilmington because of how close the city is to the ocean, but also because of how lively the cities nightlife is; the better the nightlife the more tourists who stop in to see what is going on. In addition to the research and tourism industries, the movie industry helps to employ many people because of how much film production takes place in Wilmington.
Since Wilmington is located so close to the ocean, it only makes sense that some of the most popular activities are based around the ocean; the ocean is only a short drive away. In addition to the ocean, there are many other outdoor activities that you can take part in, as long as the weather permits. Golfing is another popular pastime for the residents of Wilmington, as well as biking. In fact, the first Thursday of every month a group of cyclists gather after the local Farmer's market has ended to take a bike ride throughout Wilmington.
The city of Wilmington has over 250 acres that are dedicated to neighborhood and citywide parks. These parks contain bike trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, open spaces, basketball courts, and many other nice features. Most of the parks are open until 11 pm. To help accommodate people who like to ride or play at night many of the parks have lighted facilities.
