El Paso is the 22nd largest city in the United States, and it is the sixth largest city in the State of Texas. El Paso is located along the Rio Grande; it is also located across the border from Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. The two cities actually combine to form an international metropolitan area known as El-Paso-Juarez, although Juarez is the larger of the two areas. El Paso is also the county seat of El Paso County.
According to the numbers from the 2000 census there are 563,662 people living in the city of El Paso. 86.62% of the population is Hispanic, but this includes people from all other races, which means that they can be all Hispanic or Hispanic mixed with another race. The rest of the population make up is 76.6% White, 3.12% African American, 1.12% Asian, and 18.15% from other races that are not listed.
Out of the 563,662 people that live in El Paso, there are 182,063 households and 141,098 families that are living in the city. The median income for the families in the city of El Paso is $35,432, while the median income for households is $32,124. 19% of the families in the El Paso area are living below the poverty line, while 22.2% of the entire population is living below the poverty line. Currently the only clothing companies in El Paso are wrangler and Border Apparel, everyone else moved their manufacturing plants in search of cheaper labor. Helen of Troy, which is a manufacturer of personal health care products is headquartered in El Paso, Spira Footwear also has their corporate headquarters in El Paso. Education and the nearby Fort Bliss are two of the biggest contributors to the economy in El Paso. In fact, the El Paso Independent School District, Ysleta Independent School District, and Socorro Independent School District are three of the largest employers in the area.
