Tourism also plays an important role in Richmond’s economy, as the city is home to an abundance of historic landmarks and sights. Downtown Richmond’s Canal Walk on the James River boasts 22 historical statues and markers, including the famous Civil War Visitor’s Center. Brown’s Island and Belle Isle, also on the Canal Walk, offer tourists a well-preserved glimpse into canal history. Other famous architectural sights are represented by historic buildings such as The Maggie Walker House, Agecroft Hall, and the Governor’s Mansion. Tourists can view the city on foot by taking any number of the city’s tree-lined brick roads, or by rail, bus, automobile, and riverboat. Most automobile traffic into and out of the city comes though I-64 and I-95. The majority of the area’s air traffic is controlled by the Richmond International Airport.
The Richmond Arts Council has taken great strides to maintain the city’s vibrant arts and cultural scene. Among the city’s most well known theatres are the Carpenter Center and the Landmark Theatre. Richmond has many art galleries with hundreds of exhibits for citizens to view at any given time throughout the year. Some of the best-known galleries in the area are the Anderson Gallery and the Last Stop. Residents in Richmond support local music, and every year, the city is home to a number of musical festivals, including the world renowned “Big Gig:” 16 days of diverse music in venues throughout the city.
Because of the Arts Councils’ partnership with the city’s public school system, students of all ages in Richmond can experience its many cultural offerings. Students seeking post-secondary education have access to several local colleges and universities, including Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond. Currently, of the population who are 25 years of age or more, about 75% hold a high school diploma, and 29% have at least a bachelor’s degree. Improving the quality of education has been an important issue for current Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones, who is also focusing his efforts on creating inclusive neighborhood plans and strong initiatives for Richmond’s diverse population, which is about 57% African American, 38% White, 3% Hispanic or Latino, and 1% Native American.
